The call to evacuate your home and property can be an alarming event!

It is good to be prepared in advance. Many people make lists, in order of importance, of the things they want to take with them, and tasks they must perform, if ordered to evacuate. The items below, not necessarily in order of importance, will give you a good starting point for things to think about and discuss with your family.

Take for sure:
  • Important Papers
  • Medications
  • Prescriptions, glasses, dentures
  • Personal hygiene articles and sanitary needs
  • Sleeping bags or blankets
  • Baby food and diapers
  • Checkbook, credit cards, cash
  • Drivers license, other ID

If time permits:
  • Flashlight and extra batteries
  • Portable radio and extra batteries
  • A change of clothing for each person
  • Non-perishable or ready-to-eat food
  • One gallon of water for each person
  • Reading material
  • Recreational items such as games, cards, sewing, etc.

What to do before leaving:
  • Disconnect all electrical equipment and appliances except the refrigerator and freezer
  • Set furnace thermostats to the lowest setting
  • Turn off all cooling units
  • Turn off lights
  • Lock doors, shut and lock all windows
  • IMPORTANT: Tie a white cloth or towel to the front door as you leave so rescuers know everyone in the home has been evacuated! If there is any doubt as to which is the 'front' door, tie one to all doors.

What to do to be better prepared:
  • Discuss with family members what to do and who to contact in case of separation because the family may not be together when asked to evacuate.
  • Keep a vehicle ready with at least a half a tank of gas.
  • Keep a 72-hour evacuation kit available for an instant evacuation.
  • Pay close attention to local radio and television broadcasts. If community meetings are held, attend them!
  • Place important papers and photographs in a safe deposit box off-site.
  • Determine where pets and other livestock will be relocated since most evacuation centers won't allow you to bring them with you.
